You can set it how you want it. Some games feel fine like Street Fighter Alpha. But some games just feel wrong like Syphon Filter. So it's really hit and miss at what works.
The D-Pad is an extra 4 buttons right there.....

its alright i have legend of dragoon on my psp and there are no problems :)
I find that the fourth controller set up works best. You can always make a custom set up.
